About the Global Herpes Alliance

Who We Are

The Global Herpes Alliance is an international organization based in Belgium,
and the world’s first global platform entirely dedicated to ending herpes.

We work to align science, funding, and access in order to accelerate solutions for one of the most widespread and most neglected viral infections worldwide.

Our Mission

The Global Herpes Alliance was created to address a structural failure.

Despite major scientific advances, research efforts, funding, and patient access remain fragmented and uncoordinated.

Our mission is to act as a neutral, global platform that aligns science, institutions, and funding mechanisms, so that the most promising solutions move faster from research to real world impact.

We do not replace existing actors.
We connect them, support them, and help remove the barriers that slow progress.

A Silent Global Pandemic

Herpes is one of the most widespread viral infections in the world and one of the most neglected.

More than 3.7 billion people live with herpes globally.
Over 500 million carry the genital form (HSV-2).

Beyond physical symptoms, the virus causes profound psychological, social, and emotional harm: shame, isolation, depression, and fear of disclosure.

Herpes also triples the risk of HIV transmission, and in its most severe form, neonatal herpes can be fatal.
Every year, thousands of newborns are affected, a tragedy that remains largely invisible.

Despite its global impact, herpes has suffered from decades of underfunding, fragmentation, and lack of coordination.

This silence is not accidental.
It is structural.

Why a Global Platform Is the Missing Link

Across the world, valuable work is being done.
Researchers, clinicians, patient groups, startups, and institutions are all contributing pieces of the solution.

But these efforts remain isolated.

Funding flows through disconnected channels.
Research progresses in silos.
Patients struggle to navigate fragmented systems.
Promising solutions move slowly from labs to real-world impact.

The problem is not a lack of innovation or commitment.
It is a lack of alignment.

Without a neutral structure to connect science, funding, and access, progress remains slow, uneven, and fragile.
